Opening a Personal Bank Account in Saudi Arabia: Documents New Residents Usually Need
A local bank account is usually one of the first practical tasks after your Iqama is issued. Requirements are set in the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) Account Opening Rules, but each bank still applies its own forms, appointments and extra checks. This guide sticks to what SAMA publishes, without inventing fees or promising same-day approval.
Quick answer
Short answer: For most expatriate residents, SAMA allows banks to open an account after obtaining a copy of a valid Iqama plus the person’s address in Saudi Arabia and in their home country. You will also complete the bank’s account-opening agreement, which must capture identity, national address, occupation, contact details and basic financial information.
Key takeaways
- Core ID for expatriates: a copy of a valid Iqama (residence permit), per SAMA rule 200.1.3.
- Addresses: the bank should obtain your address in Saudi Arabia and in your home country.
- Agreement fields: SAMA lists name, nationality, ID number and validity, national address, occupation, contacts, income source, expected activity and purpose.
- Original ID: SAMA’s documents rule asks for an original copy of the ID of the natural customer, plus the signed agreement.
What SAMA expects on the form
SAMA’s rule on documents required to open a bank account is the baseline every licensed bank works from. Bring the original ID the bank asks to see, and be ready to sign their account-opening agreement.
That agreement is not a blank sheet. At minimum it should record your personal data (including national address), financial information such as source of income and expected deposits and withdrawals, the terms you accept, and a specimen signature. You also declare that you are the real beneficiary and that you will update personal data when asked, SAMA notes the update interval should not exceed five years, and that failing to renew an expired ID can lead the bank to freeze the account.
Tip
Register or update your National Address before the bank appointment. SAMA’s form rules explicitly list national address among the personal-data fields.
Documents new residents usually prepare
For expatriates holding an Iqama, SAMA’s expatriates and visitors rules state that the bank may open accounts after obtaining a copy of the Iqama, plus Saudi and home-country addresses. Iqamas issued through Passports, certain student or training routes, or Protocol Affairs are all contemplated in that rule, your bank will tell you which copy quality it accepts.
Pack for the appointment
- Valid Iqama (original to show; copy as the bank directs)
- Passport, if the bank’s checklist still asks for it alongside Iqama
- Saudi address details and National Address proof if requested
- Home-country address written clearly
- Saudi mobile number in your name
- Basic notes on income source and why you need the account
Banks still vary
SAMA sets the floor, not every branch script. Some banks add employer letters, salary certificates or in-app video checks. Ask the bank’s published checklist for your customer type the day you book. Don’t rely on a friend’s older list.
A calm sequence that usually works
You do not need a complicated playbook. Treat the opening as a short project: documents ready, appointment booked, details checked on the spot.
Typical path for a new resident
1
Confirm your Iqama is valid: expiry problems delay almost everything else. See our Iqama check and renew guide.
2
Ready your addresses: National Address plus a clear home-country line.
3
Pick a licensed bank channel: branch, app or website onboarding. Follow that bank’s current checklist.
4
Complete the agreement carefully: match the name to your Iqama spelling and review purpose-of-account answers.
5
Keep activation messages private: SMS codes and app passwords are for you only.
Warning
Do not pay a “facilitator” who claims they can open an account without your Iqama or without you attending the bank’s own process. Use the bank’s official channels only.
Special cases (keep expectations realistic)
SAMA publishes extra rules for dependents marked not authorised to work, temporary work-visa arrivals, certain visit visas and visitors with a visitor ID. Those paths can need employer letters, compliance approvals or tighter product limits. If you fall into one of those groups, read the relevant paragraphs in rule 200.1.3 with your bank, this article does not restate every exception.
Joint accounts and authorisations for expatriates are also restricted to listed family and escort situations in the same rule. Ask the bank which relationship documents it needs before you assume a spouse can be added the same day.
| Topic | Usually consistent (SAMA) | Often varies by bank |
|---|---|---|
| Core ID | Valid Iqama for expatriate residents | Whether passport copy is also filed |
| Addresses | Saudi + home-country addresses | Whether printed National Address proof is required on the day |
| Agreement | Mandatory personal and financial fields | Extra KYC questions or video interview |
| Timing | Rules are in force; no universal SLA | Appointment slots and card delivery |
